The 3,588 acre Ned Brown Forest Preserve, part of the larger, 80,000 acre Cook County Forest Preserves system, boasts a 460 acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, northern pike, catfish and walleye. Boat and canoe rentals are offered by the hour. The boat dock has a concession stand and a bait shop.
The preserve has an eight mile loop of paved biking, hiking and rollerblade trails. For serious bikers, the south end of the loop connects to the 25 mile-long Salt Creek Greenway, which ends at Chicaoland’s famous Brookfield Zoo.
There are 30 picnic groves, and the Ned Brown Grove meadow is home to kite and model plane flyers. “Like strange multicolored moths with 4-foot wings, six ultra-sophisticated kites danced and skipped on the summer air Sunday in an airborne ballet over the Ned Brown Forest Preserve.” Chicago Tribune
Within the Ned Brown preserves the 480 acre Busse Forest Nature Preserve, designated as a National Natural Landmark, with woods of red maple, swamp white oak, black ash, and an upland forest of red oaks, hickories, elms, basswood and large ironwoods, many of which are older than European settlement. Marshes have minks, muskrats and shore birds.
