Chances are, you’re coming to the Rosemont Theatre to see the legendary Johnny Mathis in concert December 1, and stay at the nearby and affordable Elk Grove Chicago Hotel!
Johnny Mathis is still on the road, still performing his hit songs. Unlike most pop crooners, he actually studied music as a kid, singing opera among other genres. He was going strong as a teen idol, until The Beatles revolutionized rock and roll.
Johnny Mathis’ folk realized they had a musical talent on their hands, buying the boy a piano and encouraging him to sing for a living. He hit the big time when Mitch Miller produced his second album, encouraging the soft vocals that Mathis is known for. Two of his biggest hits come from that era, “Wonderful, Wonderful,” and “It’s Not for Me to Say.”
In 1978, Mathis enjoyed a comeback of sorts with the Columbia Records hit “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late,” officially making Mathis, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand the three all-time artists for Columbia. Johnny Carson famously said, “Johnny Mathis is the best ballad singer in the world.”
