American quilt making (sewing and stitching of swatches of cloth), is an art form older than the United States. Early spinners and sewers made objects of stitched cloth for their families. Quilting was considered an activity for the upper classes. In the 1800s, African American quilters made beautiful quilts which, when hung from porches and doors, served as encoded routes on the Underground Railroad, for escaping slaves. Quilting today is practiced by thousands of hobbyists, artists both young and old.
